Father of the Indian Navy

Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj is considered as the ‘Father of the Indian Navy’. When he realized the need of a powerful navy he built many Naval forts as well as Naval base namely – 

1. Vijayadurg, 
2. Suvarndurg, 
3. Padmadurg, 
4. Jaigad, 
5. Sindhudurg. 

Shivaji’s fleet had two squadrons, each having two hundred ships of different class.
